Gonk guide

Where to Buy Gonks in the UK

Gonks are sold almost everywhere in season, but not every shop suits every buyer. Here is how the main places to buy gonks in the UK compare, and how to buy safely online.

In short

  • Garden centres and homeware chains have the biggest seasonal ranges, especially in autumn.
  • Supermarkets and discount shops are cheapest, but stock is limited and often sells out.
  • Etsy is best for handmade and personalised gonks; eBay is best for vintage and sold-out designs.
  • Amazon has the widest choice all year, but check the seller and safety markings carefully.
  • Charity shop websites sell gonks where the profit supports the charity's work.

Garden centres

Many UK garden centres turn into Christmas shops from early autumn, and gonks are a big part of that. They often carry branded decoration ranges in many sizes and colours, including giant floor-standing gonks, coordinated families and gonk baubles. Prices tend to be higher than discount shops, but quality is usually better: fuller beards, neater stitching and sturdier bases. Many garden centres also sell online.

Homeware and high street shops

Homeware chains such as The Range and Dunelm, and department and fashion stores such as Next, have sold gonk collections in recent seasons, often designed around a colour theme. These are a good choice if you want gonks that match your other decorations. The catch is popularity: some ranges have sold out online within days.

Supermarkets and discount shops

Discount shops and supermarkets helped start the gonk boom. Poundland's budget gonks were among its best-selling decorations of Christmas 2020, and Aldi has sold Easter gonks as Specialbuys. These are the cheapest way to start a collection or buy a stocking filler. Stock arrives in limited batches and varies between stores, so if you see one you like, buy it then.

Check the labels on budget gonks just as carefully as expensive ones. In October 2026 Primark recalled two Halloween gonks over the sand filling. See are gonks safe for children?

Charity shops

Several UK charities sell gonks through their online Christmas shops, including the RNLI, Sue Ryder, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. Profits support their work, which makes these a lovely choice for gifts. Ranges are smaller and delivery charges apply below a minimum spend.

Etsy

Etsy is the place for handmade gonks: knitted, crocheted, felted and sewn, often by UK makers. You can find gonks personalised with names, gonks dressed for a particular hobby or job, and knitting or sewing kits to make your own. Allow extra time for made-to-order items in the run-up to Christmas.

If a handmade gonk is meant for a child to play with, it counts as a toy and should meet UK toy safety rules, including a UKCA or CE mark. Ask the maker if it isn't clear.

Amazon

Amazon has the widest range all year round, from seasonal gonks to gonk mugs, jumpers, cards and craft kits. Delivery is fast, which helps if you've left it late. Quality varies enormously, though, so:

  • Check who the seller is, and whether it is sold or dispatched by Amazon or a third party.
  • Read the dimensions carefully. Photos can make a 15cm gonk look like a 50cm one.
  • Look at customer photos and reviews, not just the listing images.
  • For children, look for a clear toy age rating and a UKCA or CE mark.

eBay

eBay is good for finding designs that have sold out in shops, bundles of pre-owned gonks, and vintage 1960s-style gonks for collectors. Check the condition description, ask for extra photos if you need them, and compare sold listings to see what others have paid. See collecting gonks for more tips.

Scandinavian homeware shops

For a more traditional tomte look, Scandinavian homeware shops, including IKEA in the run-up to Christmas, often sell tomte and nisse figures. These are usually closer to the folklore originals: grey, red and white, with knitted hats and natural materials. See gonk vs gnome vs tomte for the difference.

Tips for buying gonks

  1. Buy early for popular designs and giant gonks. Seasonal ranges arrive weeks before the occasion.
  2. Measure first. Heights usually include the hat. Check whether a listing uses centimetres or inches.
  3. Read the label: toy or decoration, indoor or outdoor, batteries included or not.
  4. Compare prices across a few shops; the same branded gonk can vary in price.
  5. Keep receipts in case of faults or recalls.
